Dear Parents,
Public Speaking Competition
We are thrilled to share the exciting highlights of our recent Public Speaking Competition that took place at our school. The event was open to all grades, and even though participation was optional, we were delighted to see so many enthusiastic students stepping up to take part.
Our budding orators took the stage with confidence, delivering a fantastic array of facts and opinions on a variety of topics. The skill that our students demonstrated left both teachers and fellow students impressed. To all our participants, regardless of the outcome, we applaud your courage and determination. Each of you has demonstrated the power of effective communication and the ability to stand in front of an audience with confidence.
The competition was fierce at the cross-stage level. The quality of speeches was outstanding, and it was a close call for our judges to decide the winners. We discovered that St. Joseph's is home to many talented speakers, and we couldn't be prouder.
We would like to congratulate our stage winners, for their outstanding performances.
ES1 : Archer H (KG)
STAGE 1: James F (2B)

STAGE 2: Ava K (4G)
STAGE 3: Darcy W (6B)
Their ability to articulate their thoughts and engage the audience was truly commendable. We have every confidence that they will shine at the next round of the competition, which will be held at St. James Kotara this coming Wednesday.
We are sure that they will carry the spirit of St. Joseph's with them and make us proud once again. Remember, it's not just about winning but about showcasing the skills you've honed and sharing your voices with the world. Go Team St. Joseph's!
National Day of Action Against Bullying
Last Friday, August 18th, we acknowledged the National Day of Action Against Bullying. Aligned with our unwavering commitment to Safeguarding practices, it is our duty to recognise and acknowledge the significance of this day.
Our journey began with an assembly, conducted by our Year 6 students. They stood before us to explain the essence of the day and its profound relevance in our lives. Their words resonated deeply, as they championed the idea that each of us can be an "upstander," working collaboratively to reduce bullying behaviours not only within our school community but also extending our impact to the broader society. The assembly served as a spark, igniting conversations and reflections, and highlighting that it is our collective responsibility to foster an environment of respect and kindness. You may find the poster ‘Not all Superheroes wear Capes’ useful in talking with your children about how to be an upstander.
In harmony with the theme, "Uniquely You," students were invited to express their individuality through their attire. The vibrant, diverse, and creative outfits that graced our school on that day were a tangible representation of the beauty that lies in our differences.
However, the day's activities didn't end there. We embarked on an exciting challenge, designed to facilitate interactions beyond the boundaries of usual playmates. Students embraced the task of connecting with peers they might not typically engage with, initiating conversations about their clothing choices and the stories behind them. This endeavour opened doors to new connections, enhancing empathy and understanding among our students.
What's more, last week and on the day itself, our students immersed themselves in a variety of activities that encouraged them to ponder their treatment of others and how to respond to instances of bullying, whether direct or indirect. These activities provided a safe space for reflection and empowerment.
Currently, all classes are in the process of registering for online sessions with Kids Helpline, focusing on the theme "What is bullying?" This initiative aims to equip our students with valuable insights and strategies to navigate bullying situations and contribute to a safer environment. Kids Helpline also extends a wealth of resources to parents, offering support that you may find invaluable. See https://kidshelpline.com.au/parents
Let us always stand united against bullying, to cherish diversity, and to always choose compassion. Thank you for your support and commitment to our shared mission of fostering a harmonious and inclusive environment.

Book Week
With the theme "Read, Grow, Inspire," we embarked on a week full of literary magic, creativity, and shared inspiration.
A Remarkable Start: Assembly and Gifts
The week began with an exceptional assembly in the hall on Monday, where the magic of books and nature intertwined. Each class was presented with a special gift - a book carefully selected to ignite their imaginations and plant the seeds of inspiration. But that wasn't all! Alongside the books, every classroom received a plant pot and sunflower seeds, symbolizing the idea of growth - both in knowledge and the natural world. Our students were truly engaged, showing their enthusiasm for learning through reading and nurturing.
Sharing Stories: Nostalgia and Inspiration
Our dedicated staff members also played their part in setting the stage for a captivating week. They shared a diverse range of books that had deeply inspired them during their own childhoods. The children were spellbound by these personal tales, showcasing the timeless impact of a good story. This sharing session demonstrated the profound influence literature can have on shaping young minds. Why not share your childhood reading experiences with your children this weekend?
A Whirlwind of Fun: Literary Activities and Creativity
As the week progressed, the fun continued with a twist. Teachers exchanged classrooms for an afternoon, bringing a finalist from the Children's Book Week Council Awards to life through captivating readings and enjoyable activities. It was heartening to see our students actively engaged in these sessions, their imaginations ignited by the power of storytelling.
Teachers' Trivia Showdown: A Battle of Wits
Traditions bring us together, and our Book Week didn't disappoint. Thursday afternoon featured the much-anticipated Teachers' Book Week trivia contest. The teams battled it out, and even with tie-breaking questions, the literary brilliance of both teams shone brightly. Kudos to our teachers - Mrs Butler, Miss Murray, Ms Collins, Mrs Charnock, Ms Morgan, and Ms Bailey - for putting forth their best literary efforts and creating a fun and memorable contest.
The Grand Finale: Character Parade
Friday was the day that encapsulated the essence of Book Week. Our school transformed into a canvas of colours and creativity as students and teachers alike adorned costumes inspired by their favourite book characters. Witnessing the sheer joy and excitement for books amidst this digital age was truly heartwarming. The effort and creativity poured into the costumes were nothing short of astonishing, showcasing the unique and imaginative minds of our students.
In conclusion, Book Week 2023 was a resounding success, celebrating the magic of reading, the beauty of growth, and the enduring power of inspiration. We thank our dedicated staff, enthusiastic students, and supportive parents for making this week unforgettable. Let's continue to foster a love for reading, nurturing both young minds and flourishing sunflowers as we journey forward together.
Yours in Reading and Learning,
Karen
Student Council News - Joey’s Got Talent!
Term 3 will see the return of Joey’s Got Talent! This student council run event is an opportunity for students K-6 to share their creative talents with their peers and families. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and we appreciate your understanding in this.
Stay tuned to our Week 8 Newsletter and Compass for further information to come.
Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL)
Congratulations to the Red Sports Colour House for achieving the most tokens in the first half of Term 3! We will continue to give tokens out for this second half of the term to support our focus on our four PBL expectations
- Act Safely
- Be Respectful
- Care for All
- Do Your Best
This term our major focus has been Care for All, with 2 specific areas of need identified:
Care for belongings and equipment. This continues to be a major focus area as we still have lost property bins filled with belongings such as hats and jackets. Please support your children to make these positive changes by ensuring all items (hats, jackets, lunch boxes and drink bottles) are clearly labelled. If items do get lost or left at school, please encourage your children to go and collect them from our lost property boxes.
Care for the place you are in. We have seen positive improvements in this area. Students have more regularly been demonstrating that by caring for the places we are in, we show love, respect, gratitude and appreciation for the gifts we have been given.
Congratulations to the following students who received a PBL Award this fortnight:
Declan LH (KG), Isla S (KB), Alice DW (1G), Arabella B (1B), Alfie P (2G), Will DW (2B) Cody W (3G), Finn C (3B), Harriet M (4G), Tyler T (4B), Mila K (5G), Emelie B (5B), Tommy B (6G), Sofia H (6B)
Safeguarding - ‘Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility’
National Child Protection Week
National Child Protection Week is a campaign held annually across Australia to raise awareness of child abuse prevention. This year’s campaign will be held between 3-9 September. This year, the theme is ‘Where we start matters’. Where we start in terms of the values instilled in us from birth, the resources available to us, our securities and opportunities make a significant difference in our life outcomes.
Where we start in terms of our education, family supports, community interaction also play a significant role in our personal and social outcomes.
St Joseph’s will be participating in the Decorate Your Gate competition and will decorate our an area near the Union St entrance of the school to show that we are making a powerful statement that child protection is a top priority.
We are excited to be in the running for this year’s prize of $4,000 for our school community.

Religious Literacy Test
Every year, Year 6 students throughout the diocese take part in the Religious Literacy (RL) test. This year, the examination is scheduled for Monday, September 4th, and will mark be conducted entirely through an online platform. The purpose of this test is to gauge the extent of religious literacy among our students and identify ways in which we can enhance their proficiency in this area. Similar to other essential literacies such as scientific, mathematical, and English literacy, we aspire for our students to complete their schooling with a strong foundation in religious literacy.
Pedagogy of Encounter
With the new curriculum about to rolled out in Year 2 and Year 3 soon, I thought I would take this opportunity to revisit what the Pedagogy of Encounter is.
- The Pedagogy of Encounter is about encountering the mystery of God through the mystery of everyday life.
- Students are invited to express their own views on matters being studied and to engage with the perspectives of others and of the Catholic Church.
- The Pedagogy invites students to do more than just learn facts or content about the topics being studied; it invites them to reflect on the meaning that those facts have for them and to attend to the significance of that meaning for their way of being in the world.
- The Pedagogy challenges students to consider how the learning process has called them into action or into a new way of seeing and critiquing the world and a new way of being in it.
Through a model of dialogue that responds to the different voices within the RE classroom, student voice and agency are central to working outwards from where student, belief and encounter begins, to accompaniment of students in making religious elements and experiences personally meaningful.
There are four integrated areas of learning, three areas of Knowledge and Understanding – FAITH, STORY & WITNESS and one area which develops skills and capabilities – WISDOM.

Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE)
In Week 5 our teachers shared with you what your children have been learning in Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE). The Class News Feed provided specific information about what your children have been learning and some images of them engaged and participating in learning activities. Throughout the year our students are engaged in many different learning opportunities to facilitate learning and growth and development in this Key Learning Area. Over the course of the year, our students participate in a diverse array of learning experiences that foster growth and development in this important area of study. The following information outlines the purpose of the NSW K-6 PDHPE Syllabus.
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) develops the knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes important for students to take positive action to protect and enhance their own and others’ health, safety and wellbeing in varied and changing contexts. Physical education is fundamental to the acquisition of movement skills and concepts to enable students to participate in a range of physical activities – confidently, competently and creatively.
The study of PDHPE provides students with the opportunity to enhance and develop resilience and connectedness and learn to interact respectfully with others. Through PDHPE students develop the skills to research, apply, appraise and critically analyse health and movement concepts in order to maintain and improve their health, safety, wellbeing and participation in physical activity. Students are provided with opportunities to learn to critique and challenge assumptions, attitudes, behaviours and stereotypes and evaluate a range of health-related sources, services and organisations. They develop a commitment to the qualities and characteristics that promote and develop empathy, resilience, respectful relationships, inclusivity and social justice. Students practise, develop and refine the physical, cognitive, social and emotional skills that are important for engaging in movement and leading a healthy, safe and physically active life.
Learning in PDHPE reflects the dynamic nature of health, safety, wellbeing and participation in physical activity in the context of a diverse and rapidly changing society. It addresses health and physical activity concepts of importance to students and highlights the influences that contextual factors have on personal values, attitudes and behaviours. PDHPE provides students with an experiential curriculum that is contemporary, relevant, challenging and physically active. The syllabus is designed to give all schools flexibility to treat sensitive issues in a manner reflective of their own context and ethos.
Through PDHPE, students develop self-management, interpersonal and movement skills to help them become empowered, self-confident and socially responsible citizens. Students learn in movement, about movement and through movement and are given opportunities to apply and adapt their skills across multiple contexts. The learning experiences in PDHPE provide students with a foundation to actively contribute to, and advocate for, the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others in the community and beyond school.
This term our students have had many opportunities to be actively involved with all aspects of personal development, health and physical education though class teaching programs, specialist coaching, sporting galas and the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. For more information about this day please visit: https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/
Leanne Skinner
Primary Coordinator and Pedagogical Mentor
My name is Rebeka (Bek) Henshaw, and I am honoured to join this incredible community as the Gifted Education Project Officer, due to Gabriel Hawthorn being on maternity leave. I am onsite on Tuesdays, however, I am available via email on Wednesdays and Thursdays as well.
My background is rooted in education, particularly in diverse classroom settings. Over the years, I have had the privilege of being a Classroom Teacher in both two and three-stream schools across the diocese. This experience has taught me the immense value of tailoring my teaching approach to the individual needs of students, fostering a supportive environment where they can thrive academically and personally.
I am particularly passionate about STEM Education, which led me to pursue a Graduate Certificate in this field. Integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics concepts into the curriculum is not just a professional commitment for me, but a personal mission to equip students with essential skills for the future.
One of my most rewarding experiences was overseeing the design and construction of a Sustainability HUB. This innovative project brought together aquaponics, vegetable gardens, and workshop space to create an immersive learning environment that promotes sustainability and hands-on exploration.
I also have a background as a Virtual Academy Teacher, where I embraced the challenges and opportunities of online teaching and learning. This experience has given me valuable insights into engaging students in the digital realm while fostering a strong sense of community and collaboration.
Furthermore, I hold a Masters in Gifted Education, a field that is close to my heart. I am committed to ensuring that every student, including those with unique abilities, receives the support and challenges they need to flourish academically and personally.
I am truly excited to be part of this dynamic school community and to collaborate with you in shaping the educational experiences of our students. If you have any questions, ideas, or thoughts to share, please feel free to reach out to me at bek.henshaw@mn.catholic.edu.au. I am looking forward to getting to know you and your children better as we embark on this learning journey together.
Matildas
The nation has been swept away with the success of our beloved Matildas and whether you are a sport fan or a soccer (football!) fan or not, I'm sure it is safe to say everyone was glued to their TV’s last week with hopes that Australia might take home the bronze medal.
We may not have been successful for a third place, but our school and our nation have been extremely proud of how they have inspired us all.
It was wonderful to see our students show their support by wearing green and gold, with anticipation and hope for that night’s event.
Thank you to everyone who jumped on board to support the Matildas!
Soccer PSSA State Championships
On Monday the 14 August, I travelled to Nelson Bay to attend a team training day coordinated through Polding Soccer. On the 15 August, I competed in the first two rounds of the State Championships. We continued to play two games every day in which the selectors carefully watched our games looking for players to represent NSW. Our Polding Team came third in the group stage, securing a spot to play in the 5th place match. Unfortunately, we were not successful, gaining 6th place at this level. However, this was a victory for Polding, being the highest finish they have ever secured.
Although I didn’t make selection for the NSW team this time round, I intend to challenge myself and come back much stronger as a team player and athlete. I see 2024 as an opportunity for me to re-enter the competition at this elite level and hopefully secure a position on the NSW team.

Year 3 and 4 Touch Gala Day - Friday August 11
Last Friday over 60 students from Years 3 and 4 attended Newcastle Harness Racing club to play several games of Touch Football in the NSW Touch Association Gala Day.
We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day. It was a pleasure for Miss Parish, Miss Vervaart and I to witness the sportsmanship and teamwork of the students. Some students had not played touch football before, so their fellow students were teaching, guiding and encouraging them throughout the game, which was lovely to see. Each student gave it their all and had fun doing so. Miss Parish even had the opportunity to show her refereeing skills. Our students are to be commended for the way they played fairly and thanked their opponents after each match.
We are very grateful to the parent helpers who coached and supported all the students on the day. Grant Vickery, Katie Ponte, Leanne Player, Katie Ford, Mel Metzner, Renee Sciulli, Liana O, Connor, Anna Graham and Karen Childs. Thank you. The children were very fortunate to have your help. Congratulations St Joseph’s, it was a joy to watch you all having fun, enjoying being active with your friends while being kind and respectful.

Year 5 and 6 Touch Gala Day – Friday August 18
Last Friday we were very fortunate to attend the Year 5 and 6 Touch Football Gala Day hosted by NSW Touch. 70 students from St. Joseph’s attended, competing in 8 teams in the Boys and Girls division. It was wonderful to see so many of our students keen to participate, even those who didn’t have a huge amount of prior touch experience.
The teams all competed with a positive attitude and showed great respect for their opponents and the officials (especially when Miss Parish and Mrs Bailey were refereeing!) It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to enjoy sport without the pressure of having to win and appreciate that running around with their peers can actually just be fun! That said, there were some amazing skills on display with the students’ showing determination and commitment in every match, in particular those players who developed new touch skills, including some effective slidey dives! It was a great day, and we are very thankful to all the parent volunteers who managed teams and supported both staff and students on the day.
Thank you to Rob Berry, Luke Jones, Carly Beacher, Sarah Crosby, Mitch Cootes, Kristy Waddell, Alissa Dineen, Megan Webber, and in particular to Anna Graham for her help and support across both Touch Football gala days. A big thank you to Ms McGinlay for allowing every student the opportunity to attend and participate actively as part of a team.

Rugby Union PSSA State Championships
This week Sidney M travelled to Camden with his family to compete in the NSWPSSA Rugby State Championships, playing for the Polding Rugby Team. Sid is no stranger to this game, being successful in representing Polding last year at the State Championships as full back, and he has once again laced up his boots to compete at this high level.
On Monday August 21, Sid began the week in training sessions alongside his teammates with the games getting underway on Tuesday and the finals on Thursday.
Polding made it to the semi-finals playing against CIS and they fought hard, but unfortunately came away with a loss. This led them to battle it out for third place against our Catholic rivals, Mackillop. Sid was an integral player and involved in many plays during the match, whilst also kicking conversions for his team.
Polding was clearly the better team on the day and were successful in taking home the bronze medal with a 26-12 victory over Mackillop.
At school, we had the live feed aired on our big screens, with Sid’s fellow classmates and teachers watching on. We cheered every time he touched the ball or made a tackle, and we were so excited to watch him play.
In more exciting news, Sid’s rugby skills were obviously noted as he was selected to be a part of the NSW team and will soon play at Nationals. Congratulations, Sid! We are very proud of your efforts.
Summer Trials
In Term 4, our Central Region will be conducting trials of summer sports for the PSSA Pathway. The sports will include basketball, tennis and touch football. Students in our current Years 4 and 5 are welcome to nominate themselves for these sports. Please note that only students with high levels of skill in these chosen sports should apply. They need to have great experience in these sports with demonstrated ability to be able to progress to the next level.
Towards the end of Term 3, we will upload the required forms for your child to complete if they deem they have the skills needed and wish to nominate themselves. Please keep a look out on compass in the coming weeks for details regarding these trials.
Book Week happenings
Well, that’s a wrap for Book Week 2023. We have had a wonderful two weeks celebrating books and reading.
The book fair was a huge success, with many very happy readers. We only have one title on backorder, it's just that we need 20 copies. By far our most popular purchase. These are currently being reprinted and should be with us soon.
We were very lucky to have two authors visit us and they provided us with a great insight into the characters they have created and how they got started in writing. Both Jacqueline Harvey and Jess Black had the students enthralled.
We can’t wait to see all the sunflowers blooming in a few weeks' time. These were given to each class along with an inspirational book at our launch on Book Week on Monday. The children also got to hear from teachers about books they loved to read as children. There was great variety in the books spoken about.
During the week we have also had the opportunity for teachers to visit a different class, read one of the shortlisted stories and complete an activity with the students. Thursday afternoon was extremely exciting and very loud with the Book Week Trivia challenge. Two teams of teachers competed for the opportunity to be crowned trivia champions for 2023. There was not one winner but two, yes, the scores were tied.
Finally, we had the wonderful, amazing, awesome Book Character parade today. Words cannot describe the costumes, fun and joy seen today, so we have included lots of photos.
Fruit & Veg Month
Fruit & Veg Month is a fun and free event for NSW primary schools that puts a positive focus on fruit and vegetables for an entire month. Fruit & Veg Month 2023 will be held from Monday 28 August to Friday 22 September.
Each year Fruit & Veg Month has a special theme to inspire kids to get interested in eating, enjoying and learning about fruit and vegetables. This year’s theme ‘Fruit & Vegie STEMs’ is about learning about fruit and vegetables through subjects like maths, science and technology.
Students will get curious and look at the science, maths and technology of fruit and veg.
- What do they need to grow?
- How do they get transported and stored so they keep fresh and safe?
- What happens in our bodies when eat them?
- How to do a fruit & veg science experiment
The whole community will also take part in fun school, canteen and home activities.
St Joseph's will join hundreds of other schools across NSW to explore this concept during Fruit & Veg Month in 2023, with the theme ‘Fruit & Vegie STEMs.’
“This year’s theme encourages students to explore fruit and veg from a new and exciting angle” says Healthy Kids Association Senior Project Officer Nienke de Vlieger. “It allows children to connect to fruit and vegetables on a different level, which can encourage eating more – and a wider variety of – produce. We hope this sparks a life-long love for fruit and veg, or even an interest in STEM”
For more information, visit fruitandvegmonth.com.au.
