Dear Parents
Our Catholic Schools Week liturgy, last Monday morning, was a great way to launch the week. Our band led us in the singing, every student’s hopes for the future were presented and later displayed and Mrs Carole Kaczor took us down memory lane sharing stories of Catholic education as a student here at St Joseph’s as well as a teacher here. Many parents and grandparents who joined us for the liturgy could relate to her stories, in particular the one about milk being delivered in little glass bottles and left outside, even in the hottest of weather until it was milk break time. I know that after the liturgy, while the classes were getting ready for parents and grandparents to visit, our guests, over their morning tea, were sharing a lot of their own school stories with one another. It was so enjoyable standing out in the sunshine listening to these and I am sure that if it wasn’t for the classroom visits many of our guests would have been happy to spend a lot more time in the playground sharing their stories with one another.
It was terrific to see so many visitors join in with the hands-on activities in the classroom and experience what learning entails today. There were many smiles all round, thanks to the children being able to show their families what they can do or even teaching them to do things and from the family members who were impressed with what they heard and saw and even came away with having learnt. Our family picnic was a great occasion as well and the playground was awash with people; young and old, picnic blankets and picnic feasts.
As part of our celebrations on Monday, Mrs Jane Scott (2 Gold) was presented with a certificate and plaque of acknowledgement for 25 years of service to Catholic education. Jane has worked in Catholic education for over 30 years, across 4 dioceses and as both a teacher and a family educator and it was an honour to be able to acknowledge and thank her for all she has contributed to our schools, students and their families over this time. The whole day was an overwhelming success and one to be proud of. Thank you, Carole, for sharing your stories and photos with us. Thank you to all those who came along and joined in celebrating Catholic education and what we do here at St Joseph’s.
Our next Catholic Schools Week event was our Athletics Carnival on Wednesday. Despite some trepidation about whether the weather would be on our side, we made the call to push on with it and how glad we were that we had made this decision! The weather turned in our favour and the whole school enjoyed a day off-site with fun and games, neck and neck races and outstanding leaps and throws in the long jump and shot-put areas. There was great camaraderie amongst the children, both in their house colour teams and their class/age teams and the staff were so very proud of all of them. It was particularly wonderful to watch not only our youngest competitors in Kindergarten compete in the different events but also our Year 1 students, for it was their first school sports carnival as well due to COVID preventing our carnival taking place last year. I think our Year 1 parents and children were probably even more excited than our Kinders.
The carnival was a terrific day that ran so smoothly and this is all thanks to the many staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to organise the day along with their superb efforts on the day and the magnificent efforts of our volunteers both in the canteen and out in the field. The feedback we received from parents about the day is very much valued and I would love to share this following snippet from a parent, that cannot fail to make you feel warm inside and reassured that together we are doing something right and are part of something special.
“I would like to also acknowledge the spirit of the day. To hear the children cheer right until the last person of the race crossed that line was lovely and to witness a Kinder child give his ribbon to a fellow competitor to “have a lend” because he didn’t get one was gorgeous. This is what these carnival’s are all about.”
Our Catholic Schools Week culminated on Friday with our Mother’s Day breakfast, liturgy and ‘guest storytellers’. What a magnificent turnout for breakfast there was. A huge thanks go to our Year 3 parents for organising the breakfast, in particular Renee Mantle and the team of dads who prepared in excess of 600 croissants. The raffle was a great success, and we are very grateful for the donations of prizes for this.
Our prize winners were as follows

Year 5 led us in a beautiful liturgy with Mrs Cathy Bone sharing with us what it is to be both a mother and a grandmother. All our mothers and grandmothers were very touched when they were each presented with a handmade flower from our Year 5 children.
Our guest story tellers who visited the classrooms after the liturgy entertained the children, from Kinder – Year 6, with school stories from the ‘olden days’. Of course the stories that particularly interested them were those about getting into trouble, but they were also interested to hear about the different playground games children played in the past, how pens needed to be filled with ink, and how books and devices weren’t used but a slate was used to write on, along with the nuns teaching the children and how they used to travel to school. It was a rewarding morning for our children and hopefully our guests as well. We are so grateful to all of them for taking the time to go down memory lane with us.
School Review
Following this mammoth week, our leadership team then spent this Monday morning presenting to a panel from the Catholic Schools Office, as part of our school self-review. The self-review is part of the diocese’s Continuum of School Improvement (COSI) cycle. The purpose of the review is to:
- Know where you are as a school
- Specify desired improvement outcomes
- Design and implement an improvement strategy
- Measure and monitor improvements in outcomes
- Reflect on what has been learnt
A number of our students and staff also spoke with our CSO visitors, reflecting on the learning, changes and focus areas over the last 3 years, since the previous school review.
The panel were very complementary of the eloquence of our students, and commented on how they now have a clearer understanding of what they are learning, as opposed to what they are doing; they also noticed that much professional learning has been undertaken across the school by all teachers and that the leadership team work cohesively together and have been successful in implementing various aspects of the Leading Learning Collaborative that has been established across the diocese. They supported us in what we identified as our directions for further improvement and offered recommendations to assist us in approaching these areas of improvement. The next step is now for us to create a strategic plan for the next 3 years with consideration being given to these identified areas and recommendations.
Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander Teacher
As I mentioned earlier this term Mrs Danielle Shaw has joined our staff, taking up the role of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander teacher. Danielle has met with all our indigenous students and their teachers as well as touched base with their families. She has worked with all classes explaining her role and exploring what our students know and or want to know about Aboriginal people and their culture. Danielle will now continue to work with our indigenous students but also with various classes each term to help increase the inclusion of Aboriginal perspectives in our teaching. If your children are of indigenous heritage and you are not sure whether you indicated this on your enrolment form please contact the office and we can amend our details and Danielle can also begin to work with them. Please see her letter of introduction to learn more about her.
Reconciliation Week
Coming up is Reconciliation Week as well as National Sorry Day- recognised annually on May 26th. National Sorry Day remembers and acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, which we now know as ‘The Stolen Generations’. It is a day to acknowledge the strength of Stolen Generations Survivors and reflect on how we can all play a part in the healing process for our people and nation.
To commemorate National Sorry Day and Reconciliation week, our Stage 3 students and all our indigenous students will have the privilege of listening to a talk given by Aunty Chris Finney.
Aunty Chris is a proud Wadi Wadi tribal elder who was inside Parliament house as Kevin Rudd gave his 'Sorry' speech. She has photos and memorabilia from the day, as well as a lifetime of stories to share with students about this significant event in our country’s Reconciliation journey!
Aunty Chris will visit our school and speak with our senior students on Tuesday 25th May at 12pm. We would also like to invite all our families along to share in this experience.
ASPIRE Song Writing Showcase
On Thursday evening, Ivy Jones, one of our school captains, performed in the finals of the ASPIRE Song Writing Showcase. Song writers were invited to compose a song around either the theme of masks or dance music. The finalists then workshopped their songs with the ASPIRE musical director and then performed to an audience at St Pius X’s theatre. Many of our staff went along to see and hear Ivy sing and were totally enthralled. She sang beautifully and the lyrics to her song were very heartfelt and meaningful. Ivy was not the winner in the Primary section however she so impressed the judges that, like the winner, she will also get to record her song professionally in a studio. We are so very proud of you Ivy and you are definitely a winner in our eyes!

Curriculum Corner - Renata Powell
NAPLAN
We are now halfway through the NAPLAN testing fortnight. Year 3 and Year 5 have both completed the Writing and Reading aspect of the assessment. All students appeared very settled. This is only the second time that the assessment has been administered online, and apart from a couple short technical glitches, we are happy with how the process has unfolded so far.
It is important to remember that these tests only give us a snapshot of where the students are on their learning journey. Teachers analyse the results to assist students to continue to grow in their skills and understanding of the curriculum. This is only one tool teachers’ use to measure progress. Students are also regularly assessed within the classroom activities. The data collected regularly by staff, enables the teachers to help develop your child and target their individual needs, through appropriate planning and curriculum delivery. This improves the learning outcomes for each child.
If you have any concerns about your child’s progress, appointments to discuss the issue with your child’s teacher can be made through the school office. Official parent / teacher interviews will be conducted later this term. This is an opportunity which is offered by the school for you to discuss your child’s learning.
University of Newcastle Student Placement
St Joseph’s will host 4 student teachers from the University of Newcastle in Weeks 7-10 of this term. These students are in the second year of their teaching degree and this will be their first school placement. Student teachers will be observing lessons in the classroom, facilitating small group learning, teaching whole class lessons, completing playground duties and attending staff professional development meetings. We are grateful to 4B, 2B and 2G teachers who have offered to work alongside these beginner teachers. We have so much to share here at St Joseph’s and it is great to see that we can nurture and build the future of our teaching profession in this way.
Canberra Excursion
The countdown is on for our Year 6 excursion to Canberra. The excursion will be taking place from Wednesday 26 May to Friday 28 May. The itinerary is jam-packed! Just a few of the places we’ll be visiting are The Australian War Memorial, Parliament House, The Royal Australian Mint, The Australian Institute of Sport and Questacon. We have been keeping an eye out on the forecast and see the low single digits through the nights. We’ll definitely have to pack the Winter woolies! Thank you to the parents who were able to join us for the information session last Wednesday evening. The PowerPoint from the evening is now on Compass if there is anything you’d like to refer back to.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Be Respectful: Use kind words and actions
In class and on the playground, our PBL focus for this fortnight is to use kind words and actions. Students are reflecting on the impact, on others and ourselves, when we use kind/unkind words. They will be identifying what these actions look like, sound like and feel like. Students will be looking at an example of a kindness grid, as shown below, and seeing if they can be creative and think of their own ways to show kindness towards other. Please keep this conversation going at home.
Students are enjoying taking their class tokens to the colour house boxes and watching the numbers rise. Special thanks to our dedicated Sports Captains for counting our tokens. The end of Week 5 will mark the next time we announce the mid-term winning colour house.
Celebrating our Faith - Donna McMillan
A beautiful prayer to share with each other-
Aboriginal Thanksgiving Prayer
God of Holy Dreaming, Great Creator Spirit, from the dawn of creation you have given your children the good things of Mother Earth.
You spoke and the gum tree grew.
In the vast desert and the dense forest, and in the cities and at the water’s edge, creation sings your praise. Your presence endures at the rock at the heart of our Land.
When Jesus hung on the tree you heard the cries of all your people and became one with your wounded ones: the convicts, the hunted, the dispossessed.
The sunrise of your Son coloured the earth anew, and bathed it in glorious hope.
In Jesus we have been reconciled to you, to each other and to your whole creation.
Lead us on, Great Spirit, as we gather from the four corners of the earth; enable us to walk together in trust from the hurt and shame of the past into the full day which has dawned in Jesus Christ.
Amen.
A Prayer for the Earth
I invite you to join in a moment of reflection with this beautiful Prayer for the Earth by Pope Francis, published in Laudato Si’. Click on the link to access.
Month of May - Mary
The month of May has been dedicated by the Church as a time of devotion to Mary, who is honoured as the first disciple, Mother of God and Mother of the Church. Mary is recognised as the one who listened and responded to the call of God.
Christians see Mary as a human being, who willingly allowed grace to work in her. St. Luke tells us that from the moment that Mary was told that she was chosen to be the Mother of God, she expressed her natural feeling: “Mary was deeply troubled by the angel’s message…” and “Mary pondered those things in her heart”. All mothers ponder things about their children.
Mary, like us, had to strive to understand the mystery of the revelation made to her with regard to her Son, Jesus. She had to make her personal journey of faith as we now make ours. St. Bernard called her “Stella Maris” the “Star of the Sea” our guide and our assurance, as we journey on the stormy tossed waves of our lives.
Mary, we ask you to obtain for us the strength to lead a life offered to God in thanksgiving and praise. Be present with us at all times. Guide us safely into the presence of your Son, Jesus, so that we may, with you and all the Saints, share His life, happiness and love. Amen

Mother's Day
Thank you to all those who were able to join us for our Mother’s Day breakfast and liturgy. We had such a beautiful morning of sharing and praying together. A very special thank you to Mrs Cathy Bone for sharing her reflections and insights with us. It was such a joy to hear Cathy’s wonderful stories about her gorgeous grandson.
On Sunday, we celebrated those women in our lives who model God’s unconditional love for us. We also remember, in a special way our mothers who are no longer with us; those who have died and those who are separated from their children. On Mother’s Day this year we recognised and thanked all the mothers and mother figures who inspire us, provide care, wisdom and generosity to those in their care. We hope you had a very special Happy Mother’s Day.

Athletics
On behalf of the St Joseph’s staff, we would like to say a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who was involved in the Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 5th May. It was so wonderful to welcome so many parents and grandparents back to this event.
The weather held out for a beautiful day at the track and we were thrilled to see all students participate, giving their best effort and demonstrating a positive attitude! There were a lot of smiling faces on the track and in the grandstand. Many students pushed themselves to achieve their very best on the day.
A school event like this takes many hands to make it work and the day would not have been possible without the hard work and assistance of several members of St Joseph’s community! We are so appreciative of your time and support!
Special mention must go to:
- Terry Collins, Paul Nolan, Justine Owens, Julie Kiem, Tammy Wilson, Nathan Zervos, Lauren Flynn, Kristy Hatherly and Ben & Ashlea Tutton, for their amazing efforts supporting the field events!
- Mrs Brand and all of the mums and dads who pitched in to provide lunch and snacks for the children and spectators at the carnival.
- And anyone else who jumped into action when they saw a need to assist on the day.
Each of the 4 colour houses cheered on their team mates with pride, and kept their areas clean and tidy. At the completion of the event the House point results were as follows:
- Blue House – 427 points
- Green House – 407 points
- Gold House – 301 points
- Red House – 222 points
A big congratulations to the Blue House, who were victorious on the day!
Students in Kindergarten and Year 1 received their ribbons at the carnival, but we celebrated our winners today at the Year 2-6 Ribbon presentation.
Congratulations also go to the following students who will be representing St Joseph’s at the Regional Athletics Carnival, which will take place at the Fearnley-Dawes Athletics Track on Friday 11th June

6G News
Year 6 Gold have made an awesome start to Term 2! Along with our friends in 6 Blue, we are enjoying the opportunities that come with being leaders of our school community and are especially excited for our excursion to Canberra next week! Below is a snapshot of what learning looks like in our class.
Learning Spaces
6 Gold is a positive learning community. Supporting each other, having a growth mindset, taking risks, and celebrating our own and our classmates' achievements are the keys to success. As we learn in a contemporary classroom, we use the terms ‘Campfire, Waterhole and Cave’ to define our flexible learning spaces. Based on the research of David Thornburg, these terms replicate how communities have gathered, met and learned since ancient times. The campfire is a space where we gather to learn from teachers, guest speakers and fellow students. The watering hole is a space where we can share information and discoveries by working together as both learner and teacher. The cave is a private and often silent space where we can think, reflect and have individual time. Together, we wrote and agreed upon what learning should look and sound like when we are in each learning environment.
English
In reading we have been exploring figurative language in texts such as alliteration, personification, similes and metaphors. We are analysing how these literary devices make the reader form images in their minds. In writing we are learning to compose personal responses that express our opinion of a text. An important strategy we use is our ‘Bump It Up! Wall’. This wall assists us in knowing what is required to be successful, as well as showing us 'where to next'. To help us aim high, we worked in teams to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of four different example texts, judging against a Success Criteria that we devised together. These were then put on display on our ‘Bump It Up! Wall’ as a powerful resource for us to use when we write and assess our own personal responses.
Mathematics
Mathematics in Year 6 is a lot of fun! We undertake multistep investigations where we get to apply our knowledge of Maths to solve problems and justify our answers. This term, we have been busy exploring BODMAS (Order of Operations). We completed an investigation where we had to use this knowledge to solve a very tricky problem titled “I’ve found a million dollars!” We applied our knowledge of number, area, volume and mass to solve it. This investigation was challenging and created a lot of discussion. What do you think...could a 50cm x 40cm x 10cm suitcase contain one million dollars' worth of $50 notes?
Religious Education
In Religion we are learning to understand that we are made in the image of God and exploring the idea of our responsibility for one another and for creation. We recently looked at Genesis 1:27, "So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them”, and asked what does that say about each of us? We then drew self-portraits and around it, listed the things we need to survive and added pictures of creation to the picture showing how we are also part of the world around us.
Science
This term, Year 6 are learning about the materials we use when building and creating items, and the purpose and reason behind these choices for specific materials. The premise for our unit is based on a scenario where…
“You have been dropped on a tropical island with little or no supplies. To help you survive you need to research and design a sustainable and safe shelter that will protect you from the wind, rain and sun. On the island you discover a shed with a number of materials that you will need to investigate to determine whether they have the appropriate properties to be used for your shelter.”
We are understanding what ‘fair testing’ means and undertaking experiments to test the properties of various materials. We’ll then use this knowledge to build our structures! It was great at the recent open day to have so many parents and grandparents come along and help us discover how waterproof various materials were!
HSIE
In History this term with Ms Powell, we have undertaken investigations into how life has progressed for Aboriginal people over the past fifty years or so. We have investigated the Freedom Riders, the 1967 Referendum and The Racial Discrimination Act (1975). We are currently researching the Mabo decision and how it was significant to the plight of the Aboriginal people in Australia.
Art
In Visual Art we are learning about and appreciating surrealism. We looked at some famous surrealist pieces and then used Microsoft publisher to edit and create our own appropriated surrealistic artworks!
PE
We prepared for the athletics carnival by participating in running, shot put and long jump practice in PE lessons. We are proud to be leaders of our school and really enjoyed taking on that role at the Athletics carnival last week! At the end of the day our voices were almost as sore as our feet, but we did ourselves and our school proud. Great job everyone!
A Purr-fect end?
In 6 Gold we love (or is that loathe??) dad jokes! This is a picture of Mr Watt’s cat “helping mark” some of our work. Luckily, none of it got damaged. You could say it was nearly a CATastrophe!
Premier’s Reading Challenge
‘Swing into a good book.’ That’s exactly what the following students have been doing as they completed their Premier’s Reading Challenge. Congratulations William D, Anthony H, Millicent, Marcus Y, Tom A, Evan T, Xavier C, Patrick A, Angeline J, Isabella Y and Ashley H.
Well done everyone.
Students have until 20th August to complete their reading list.
Overdue library books – a few students have received reminders to return their very overdue books. If a book is lost the replacement value must be paid at the office.
National Simultaneous Storytime
It's time to have some fun!
Next Wednesday is National Simultaneous Storytime. The book this year is "Give me some Space" by Phillip Bunting.
The Infants classes will receive a copy of the book to keep in their classrooms and the Primary classes will be listening to a reading of the book by Dr Shannon Walker from the International Space Station.
Students will participate in activities in their classrooms and there is a colouring in competition being conducted by Learn From Play. These must be handed in at Library by lunch on Wednesday to be scanned for the online competition
Happy Reading
